Psychedelic relic

Psychedelia was already becoming fast a thing of the past by 1970 ,and however,Marc Simenon ,Georges Simenon's son felt compelled to include one of these wacky sequences in his "le champignon" (the mushroom (sic)) aka as "l'assassin frappe à l'aube" .Featuring his blonde wife Mylène Demongeot and totally wasting a first -class thespian such as Alida Valli -who had rarely been so ridiculous- ,Simenon tried to imitate Clouzot or Chabrol but his work is completely insignificant and is nothing but a jumble where we find a workaholic wife, her husband's war memories and his late mother who treated him bad, plus a neurotic young man,an old hoodlum, and a nymphomaniac painter who used drugs as the rock groups did in those trouble times:just for the sake of art..Ah it takes place in Switzerland and yes they treat themselves to a delicious fondue .

The Twelve Chairs

THE TWELVE CHAIRS is a different kind of Mel Brooks comedy. Its story, from a Russian novel by Ilf and Petrov, will seem very tasteful and human to those who are acquainted with Brooks' usual raunchiness. This movie is a nice change. Ron Moody and Frank Langella star, with Dom DeLuise and a special appearance by Mel Brooks as Tikon.

Very unslick.

The fact that Henri Charriere, whose life was dramatized in "Papillon" with Steve McQueen in 1973, wrote the script for this caper film and also has a supporting role in it may make some people willing to check it out, mostly out of curiosity. But don't be fooled; it's an (initially) muddled, padded and unexpectedly unslick picture. Not even Claudia Cardinale in a low-cut dress can make it worth watching. (*1/2)

His father needs Antonio's recovery to keep family control of the corporation, and Antonio's wife, children, and mistress want access to Antonio's money. They stage elaborate recreations of traumas in his childhood that mix with his own memories and hallucinations. Will they succeed? Will he come out of it?

Dull Political Allegory? Satire?

This film was very dull and uninvolving. Perhaps it is a political allegory, for which I have no interest or understanding. Someone called it a comedy, but I didn't laugh once, nor did I noticed any attempts at humor. Most of the time I didn't know why the characters were saying what they were, if they were lying, who knew what... it was all very unresolved. Who were the man's advisaries? Who were his enemies, why?

At one point the father keeps asking "what's the Swiss bank account number?" Okay, so that shows he's greedy, but it isn't very clever or interesting or dramatic. Everybody in this film is greedy, which ruins the drama.

Does not flatter the Danish nation

I wish I could say something positive about this film. I suspect the other review was written by a Dane who is related to the film's director, or possibly one of the actors. But I'm sure it was a Dane!

The script is quite dreadful. The characters are wooden and one dimensional and deliver their lines like robots. There are some fine Danish actors in this film who should not have necessarily been hindered by playing their respective parts in English. However, with such an awful script, no actor in the world could have injected life into such dreary dialogue.

I hope a contemporary Danish film maker will have the courage to tell this important story again one day. With a proper storyline. And a proper script.

COUNTESS Dracula (Peter Sasdy, 1971) **

This isn't one of the best Hammers: unusual and atypically authentic but basically unremarkable. The Bathory legend is rendered silly, mainly because it was almost completely re-invented for the screen: the subject matter may have been controversial for its day but Hammer treat it like another Transylvanian vampire, which is a shame, complete with the ridiculous title!

Leads Ingrid Pitt and Nigel Green are quite good: their characters are well-rounded and their relationship is believable. Maurice Denham is amiable, though his comic sage is a bit overstated for the purpose, then suddenly turning conspirator which leads to his unlucky end. Lesley-Ann Down's role as the young Countess is hopelessly under-developed.

Apart from Pitt's few instances of exposed flesh, the film's nude content is entirely gratuitous, as was Hammer's style at this late vintage of their life-span; the violence is occasionally effective (for instance, Nike Arrighi's murder) but mostly rather tame. One other thing which annoyed the hell out of me was that servant woman who kept asking about her missing daughter!

The finale, while effective, is preposterous for a couple of reasons: having been suspected of mass murder, the Countess would certainly not have been allowed to celebrate her wedding on such a grand scale; even worse, her apparent decision not to 'bathe' on such a momentous occasion is incomprehensible, so that the pay-off is entirely predictable! Compared to other filmizations of the Bathory legend, and DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS (1971) in particular, this take on the 'facts' emerges as both hokey and extremely old-fashioned!

The transfer is pretty good for a 30 plus-year film (it seems to have been quite well preserved); ditto for the audio. The theatrical trailer is quite unusual and, frankly, it's better and wittier than the film proper! The commentary is very interesting and well-paced (though lack of a mention of the other Bathory films or Pitt's obvious dubbing is sorely felt, also moderator Jonathan Sothcott and director Sasdy's discussion about a certain shot's presence, or not, in the final version of the film); it ends on a bit of a scuffle, however, between Sasdy and Pitt (who seems to bear some kind of a grudge against the script) which somewhat dampens the otherwise warm and nostalgia-filled talk!

One of the polish cinematography brightest jewels!!!

This movie is one of the best polish movies there were ever made! The great story, the patriotism, the characters and most of all the irresistible humor have made this movie so special, that it entertains viewers of many generations! While most war movies show the terror of it, this movie shows it's brighter side. The side where people are brave, patriotic and they managed to do the impossible! Also shows how true is an old polish quote: "If a Pole wants to do something, he'll do it no matter how!" If you'd ask me, I'd gave you examples from my family that could prove those incredible situations! Hope you all will see it and like it as much as I do! Greycat R! Krystian Andrzej Dylewski

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

... George Lucas made a thoughtful, intelligent movie called THX 1138.

Those who prefer space opera to genuine science fiction will be disappointed. "Was he on drugs?" some will wonder. "Why WASN'T he on drugs?" others will protest.

The future dystopia is a staple of the science fiction genre, including such greats as Fritz Lang's "Metropolis," Truffaut's adaptation of Bradbury's "Farenheit 451," and Jean Luc Godard's "Alphaville." THX 1138 belongs in this group of classics.

If you are enough of an immature male to truly enjoy Lucas's interminable "Star Wars" series, you probably will be bored to death with THX 1138. It's most significant special effects generator was the hair clipper used to give all the actors, male and female, that classic antiseptic skinhead look. Nevertheless, it is as socially and intellectually relevant today as it was when Lucas made it back in 1971 -- and, sadly, probably far MORE relevant.

Try it. You just might wish he'd done more like this.

Review :

Excellent and sadly unknown mystery thriller!

Fragment of Fear is a film that has somehow slipped under the radar since its release in 1970 and that's a real shame as while the film does have a few narrative problems; this is excellently produced and well worked mystery thriller that really does deserve to be more seen. The film is halfway between a murder mystery and a psychological thriller and director Richard C. Sarafian gives both halves of the film equal credence as the focus is stretched across the central character's questionable mental health and the murder of his aunt that he is investigating. The central character is Tim Brett; he's a reformed drug addict living in Italy. He returns to London when his aunt is found murdered and begins asking people who knew his aunt questions. It's not long before strange things start happening to him; his flat is broken into, he receives a letter that was written on his own typewriter and gets strange phone calls. It soon transpires that someone doesn't want Tim investigating. But naturally, considering he was a drug user, nobody will believe him...

Some have labelled this film as a British Giallo; I don't agree that such a thing exists personally, but Fragment of Fear does feature some staples of Italy's finest type of film. The murder mystery is a given, but we also have an unseen killer and adding to that is the fact that many Giallo's feature a lead character with a fractured state of mind. The film is lead by the great David Hemmings who puts in a good performance. I was unsure of how he would across as a former drug user given his debonair screen presence, but he actually fits into this role really well and is not hard to believe. Director Richard C. Sarafian keeps the film streamlined and the action focused on the mystery which ensures that Fragment of Fear is always interesting and entertaining. The film gets more exciting as it goes along and it all boils down to a good ending that provides a nice twist and also manages a bit of ambiguity. Overall, it's a real shame that this film is so obscure as it deserves a wider audience and hopefully it will soon be picked up for a DVD release. Recommended if you can find it!

One of the Finest Stage Adaptations in Film History

This is a beautiful, glorious filming of Chekhov's brilliant play. Unfortunately, because it cannot be found on video, I had to catch it late-night on TV in order to see it. This really deserves a video release.

The acting is superb, especially by Joan Plowright, Jeanne Watts, and Louise Purnell, who flesh out the conflicting characteristics perfectly. Olivier himself puts in a fine performance as the alcoholic officer, and two of Britan's finest actors, Alan Bates and Derek Jacobi, offer wonderful support. The photography by Geoffrey Unsworth is magnificent, and the simplistic production design makes you feel like you're actually in a theater watching a production. As always, Olivier does more with the theater than any other director could. Find it if you can- they show it on the ENCORE once in a while.

Barmy and Clod, AIP style

Sorry, I mean Bonnie and Clyde get a re run at American International Pictures. I saw this in first release at our wonderful Sydney Capitol Theatre, home of the changed-weekly drive in double feature except this was a glorious 2500 seat plaster picture palace. A BULLET FOR PRETTY BOY + ERIK THE CONQUEROR was the 70c double feature in 1971 and I was there, with lollies and still had change from $2. Handsome pop dude Fabian made a passable Floyd mainly because he was pretty in his Matt Lattanzi way. The only reason this film was made was because of BONNIE AND CLYDE and AIP was always keen to cash in on a fad. Also they probably had access to the props and cars from BOXCAR BERTHA and BLOODY MAMA made the previous year. I miss the days of AIP, they always made trash and treasure and always entertaining. BULLET FOR PRETTY BOY was exactly like a B grade version of BONNIE AND CLYDE, banjo music and all.

It was a great movie!

I remember seeing this movie as a boy at the Intermountain Indian School in Brigham City, Utah. I thought it was a very good movie. It kept me laughing (like the book) for years. I still think of this movie and laugh on occasion. At the risk of sounding like I don't care (but being part Osage) I would like to say that the Native American uprising on the 70's (and in part fueled by getting the native plight out to the general population which this movie did) worked! The Native American Nations (at least the ones with any motivation) are prospering. The Osage have Oil on the res. Most reservations now have gaming on them that draw money to the res. Anyone that talks of the plight and whines of the times as they are now should try to become a quiet old man. I await the re-make of this fine film!

Holmes tries his hand at comedy in this one with some atrocious one-liners. Thankfully for us he did not pursue a career in comedy. This film is an exercise in tedium. It has next to nothing to do with vampirism except for Holmes spouting some vampire-like crap in the beginning of the movie and Holmes becoming a skeleton at the end. Sandwhiched in between is one soft-core sex scene after another. One guy, one girl. Two girls. One guy, two girls. One guy, three girls. Two guys, four girls. One vampire, four girls. None of the proceeding are very interesting and the viewer will find an eager desire to fast-forward through the whole thing. A cheap, unimaginative sexploitation film in every way.

Review :

Exploitation cinema of the old school

The title of the film translates as "Deviations of physical love", although the German word "Abarten" covers the whole range from "variation" to "perversion", making the audience wonder what to expect.

The film is a collection of fictional (unconnected) episodes depicting and analysing various forms of sexuality that go beyond "normal" heterosexual relations. The subjects of the four episodes are lesbianism, transvestitism, male homosexuality, and sadomasochism. Some stiff grey-haired academic provides a voice-over and also the analysis between the pieces.

Such academic treatment was often used in Germany in the early 1970s (in the UK even in the early 1990s!) as an excuse to show lots of naked flesh and get away with some softcore rumpy-pumpy. Regarding this film however, it would not be entirely fair to denounce the academic framing as bogus - it simply is part of the sensationalist package, to satisfy people's awakening curiosity about these subjects. From a 21st century perspective, much of the commentary (and quite a lot of the action) appears terribly dated, not to mention that some of the science has not stood the test of time.

The least compromised episode is the one on male homosexuality, although even this has a moment of unintentional hilarity, when the wife tries to rekindle the waning sexual appetite of her husband by wearing the S.H.E. outfit. In a supporting part, this episode also features Werner Röglin in his AFAIK only true-to-live portrayal of a gay man (his campness does not transgress into silliness) - later in the decade he would specialise in the type of gay characters who otherwise only live in jokes of politically incorrect stand-up comedians.
