Review :

A young and beautiful Genevieve Bujold falls victim to her own religious convictions

This one is really hard to find, so if you've managed to get ahold of it kudos. Donald Sutherland and Genevieve Bujold are absolutely great in this as a young priest and commited choir girl. Paul Almond does a really nice job of easing into their growing and confusing relationship, which really picks up as the narrative unfolds in unlikely ways by the third act.

You really have to watch this whole movie before you form an opinion on it, and if you miss the last shocking 30 seconds then you'll probably have a low opinion of this movie. This one really need to be re-released on DVD (or at least video besides at the National Archives!) so it can get an audience.

Antigone updating.

The films of Liliana Cavani have never appealed to me, and I consider most of them (not all) to be among the most obnoxious of those modern cinematic works with a presumed claim to importance.

THE CANNIBALS is a modern reworking of the drama of Antigone, in the format of a radical political allegory. Set in the city of Milan, where a fascist government leaves the bodies of captured rebels on the streets, it is about Antigone, who wants to bury her dead brother. The character of Tiresias, a zombie-like Pierre Clementi who is about as expressive as the corpses we see lying around during the whole film, speaks an extra-galactic language and likes to eat fish (Christ symbol, GET IT???) Antigone and Tiresias spend much time taking away some of the bodies, placing them in caves, and giving them bread and fishes. Why do the bodies strewn everywhere never decompose, by the way? Oh yes, they are the recurring symbol of the evil of this totalitarian state. How stupid of me. Haimon (Tomas Milian), who defies his father the prime minister, wants to become an animal. But we can hardly care what anybody wants to do in this movie, so preposterous and annoying is it.

Universally despised by mainstream critics, the movie really deserved all the trashing it got, notably after its New York Film Festival showing. It is irksome, pretentious, and quickly wears on the nerves. The grating music by the usually good Ennio Morricone is not among his best, and sounds like it belongs in a spaghetti western.

I liked it.

First off I wanna comment on the First User Comments diatribe on Mick Jaggers Australian Accent. If I am wrong please correct me but I believe in actuality the Real Ned Kelly's family was in fact 'Irish'.

But like I said Correct me if I'm wrong.

The story was decent. I think the Music in the film really made it great for me. I believe Shel Silverstein was the Writer of the tunes. I'm not sure but I think that the dude who sings the Dukes of Hazzard Theme is the guy who sang them.

I don't know it may be a bit campy but I enjoy it every time as it is usually on the Satellite channel Encore every 3 or 4 months. I usually watch it, and like it.

I think if you go at it with a blank slate its decent.

Screw Heath Ledger man I wont even comment on his "Ned Kelly" movie. Nothing personal I just don't think he's a very good actor. I think Mick Jagger is in the words of Eric Cartman, 'Hella-cool'

A Vision Splendid

There seems a common thread in most reviews for "Ryan's Daughter", you will read that the film does not work, it not as good as Lean's earlier masterpieces, it's too long, too boring and too "big", ALL NOT TRUE!! I'm sure most of those reviewing this magnificent motion picture have only seen it on a VHS tape or Television screening, which is the only explanation for these strange comments. For those who saw "Ryan's Daughter", in it's original 70mm presentation or even in the recent Australian 35mm screenings, you will understand the intimacy and beauty of this wonderful film. Having enjoyed it's longest run in the world at Sydney's Ascot Cinema (approx 2 years) the Sydney movie goers went back again and again as they fully appreciated this fine movie. Hopefully Warner Bros are preparing a fabulous transfer from the original 70mm elements (a quality 70mm print still exist, thanks to the poor US box office) to give us a quality DVD and make the long, long wait worthwhile. I hope WB can add some better extras than the trailer and short "making of" MGM added to the Laserdisc, it would be good to see the 2004 BBC Documentary "Ryan's Daughter Revisited" with Sarah Miles as featured extra. Also surely MGM must have produced a lot of additional promo material as this was their premium and much anticpated 1970 release. Congratulations to those who love this movie, for those who critise it hopefully one you will get to see "Ryan's Daughter" as it was intended to "get" what Lean was doing and how successful he was at delivering. No one can argue that the cinematography is perhaps the BEST ever.

Region 2 DVD Release Date

In reply to an earlier review Network DVD are going to release this on DVD on the 1st November 2010.

I remember seeing this TV movie on ITV one Christmas in the mid 1970s and thought it was fairly reasonable ITC fare. I have to agree with another reviewer that it was not difficult to work out who the culprit was, I can even remember the plot pretty well all these years later. I am looking forward to getting the DVD to see what I think of it some 35 years later. Network are initially releasing 'The Firechasers' as a "web site exclusive" so it won't be available at online stores like Amazon for a while yet.

Excellent, Delightfully Macabre Horror Anthology From Amicus

The British production company Amicus is generally known as the specialist for horror anthologies, and this great omnibus called "The House That Dripped Blood" is doubtlessly the finest Amicus production I've seen so far (admittedly, there are quite a few that I have yet to see, though). "The House That Dripped Blood" consists of four delightfully macabre tales, all set in the same eerie mansion. These four stories are brought to you in a wonderfully Gothic atmosphere, and with one of the finest ensemble casts imaginable. Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee (Cushing and Lee are two of my favorite actors ever), as well as Denholm Elliott and the ravishing Ingrid Pitt star in this film - so which true Horror fan could possibly afford to miss it? No one, of course, and the film has much more to offer than just a great cast. "The House That Dripped Blood" revolves around an eerie rural mansion, in which strange things are happening. In four parts, the film tells the tales of four different heirs.

The first tale, "Method For Murder", tells the story of Horror novelist Charles Hyller (Denholm Elliott), who moves into the House with his wife. After moving in, the writer suddenly feels haunted by a maniac of his own creation... The first segment is a great kickoff to the film. The story is creepy and macabre throughout and the performances are entirelly very good.

In the second story, "Waxworks", retired businessman Phillip Grayson (Peter Cushing) moves into the house, and suddenly feels drawn to a mysterious Wax Museum in the nearby town... The great Peter Cushing once again delivers a sublime performance in this, and the rest of the performances are also very good. The tale is delightfully weird, and the second-best of the film, after the third.

The third tale, "Sweets To The Sweet" is by far the creepiest and most brilliant of the four. John Reed (Christopher Lee) moves in with his little daughter. The private teacher and nanny Mrs. Norton, whom Mr. Reed has employed to instruct his daughter, is appalled about her employer's strictness towards his daughter, and is eager to find out what reason the overprotective father's views on upbringing may have... This best segment maintains a very creepy atmosphere and a genuinely scary plot. Christopher Lee is, as always, superb in his role. Nyree Dawn Porter is also very good as the nanny, and my special praise goes to then 11-year-old Chloe Franks. This ingenious segment alone makes the film a must-see for every true Horror-fan.

In the fourth segment, Horror-actor Paul Henderson (Jon Pertwee) moves into the house with his sexy mistress/co-star Carla (Ingrid Pitt). This fourth story is satire, more than it is actually Horror. It is a highly amusing satire, however, and there are many allusions to other Horror films. At one point Henderson indirectly refers to Christopher Lee, who stars in the previous, third segment...

All four segments have a delightfully macabre sense of humor and a great atmosphere. As stated above, the third segment is by far the creepiest and greatest, but the other three are also atmospheric and often macabrely humorous Horror tales that every Horror lover should appreciate. An igenious atmosphere, a macabre sense of humor, genuine eerieness and a brilliant cast make this one a must-see. In Short: "The House That Dripped Blood" is an excellent Horror-omnibus that no lover of British Horror could possibly afford to miss. Highly Recommended!

Middling and Overlong

A man escapes from prison and seeks the loot he had stashed away five years earlier. The middling narrative moves in fits and starts, with scenes unfolding at a leisurely pace. In particular, there's an elaborate kidnapping scene that plays out in such minute detail that it loses all momentum. The presentation is rather confusing. In fact, the flashback to the events of five years earlier is so clumsily handled that it takes a while for it to become clear that earlier events are being recounted. It opens with an extended prologue, a movie within the movie, that overstays its welcome. The same could be said of the film, which runs out of steam long before the end.
