Salvatore Samperi light

This movie is called "Venial Sins" which are, of course, small sins that can be easily forgiven. This is a kind of sequel to Salvatore Samperi and Laura Antonelli's more famous film "Malizia". But whereas that was about a teenage boy who is in love with his maid-cum-stepmother (Laura Antonelli) and sexually blackmails her before she turns the tables, this is a more gentle film about a teenage boy (Allesandro Momo) in love the with his blow-hard brother's wife (Antonelli again). But he doesn't sexually blackmail her, nor is there the kind of class exploitation that puts the "malice" in "Malizia". This is a much more gentle comedy that has the boy confessing that he's in love with a married woman to his brother, only to have the oblivious buffoon actually encourage his younger sibling to cuckold "the lady's husband". Meanwhile, the elderly patriarch of the family ogles his young maid and is trying to kill his wife's annoying dog, but he too does not really step over the line like the characters in "Malizia" or other Salvatore Samperi movies.

The same way Russ Meyer is cinematically obsessed with large breasts, Tinto Brass with voluptuous asses, and David Hamiliton with nubile, post-adolescent females, Italian filmmaker Salvatore Samperi is obsessed with incest. It is a theme in every one of his movies. "Malizia" and "Kill the Fatted Lamb" are about sons and stepmothers. "Grazie Zia" is about a nephew and aunt. "The Smell of Flesh" is about an uncle and niece. "Nene" is about underage cousins. "Scandalo" is about a mother giving her teenage daughter to her male lover. "Ernesto" involves a bisexual three-way with male and female fraternal twins. And "The Dark Side of Love" is about the blood taboo of brother and sister. Compared to these, teenage boy and sister-in-law is indeed a pretty venial sin. Also, I don't know if it was just the version I saw, but this particular movie has NO sex or nudity in it, even with both Antonelli and a teenage Monica Guerritori in the cast (two actresses never renown for leaving their clothes on). It could have just been a TV-friendly cut, but this also fits with the lighter tone of this particular movie.

One thing's for sure Salvatore Samperi desperately needs an English-friendly DVD box set devoted to him. His movies are almost all only available in horrible-looking bootlegs with truly atrocious dubbing or no English subtitles whatsoever. Cut or not, the version I saw of this looked very good and had English subs, but while I'm a long, long way from fluent in Italian, I think I speak it better than the guy who "fan-subbed" this thing evidently speaks English. I had to totally ignore the subtitles at some points because they were so baffling. Still, like all Samperi films, this one is definitely worth seeing.

Tame AIP "Biker" flick Post-Easy Rider!

This cheapo "biker" flick featuring bikers, hippies, and cowboy rednecks is pretty tame stuff with TERRIBLE music throughout. The opening theme song is especially annoying. Don Stroud has presence as usual, but the script never goes anywhere. Tyne Daly is young and attractive and believable. Bill McKinney (a few years before Deliverance) is appropriately scummy and loud. Luke Askew is surprisingly ineffective as commune leader.

By 1970 these flicks were practically a dead issue after Easy Rider opened up new territory. A 3 out of 10. Best performance = Larry Bishop (as Pilot). One of the worst "biker" films. Hell's Angels on Wheels is still the best of this genre, although I haven't seen Devil's Angels with John Cassavetes and Mimsy Farmer.

a don't miss camp classic

was this really made in 1970? this film has the look + feel of a '50's B classic. i think ed wood jr. was still alive when this was released + he must have loved it. watching this film i keep hitting the cable guide to be sure it said 1970. i was watching dark shadows + vanishing point in that era. everyone was tuning in , turning on , + hating dick nixon. vietnam was raging + zepplin + sabbath ruled. to say this film doesnt fit that era is an oxymoron. this film belongs in another era . the 50's in all that tecnicolor glory. hansen is great in the dual role of george/christine. and that guy who plays the writer boyfriend is a riot, a swarmy george nader type. i guess nader was too old in 1970 for the part but he would have been great. this is a must see for all ed wood fans. glen or glenda has nothing on this classic. ed wood + jorgensen had so much in common + this story was the real break in eds woods career. if ed could have only made a film nearly this good.

World War I seems far away from Ireland's Dingle peninsula when Rosy Ryan Shaughnessy goes horseback riding on the beach with the young English officer. There was a magnetic attraction between them the day he was the only customer in her father's pub and Rosy was tending bar for the first time since her marriage to the village schoolmaster. Then one stormy night some Irish revolutionaries expecting a shipment of guns arrive at Ryan's pub. Is it Rosy who betrays them to the British? Will Shaugnessy take Father Collin's advice? Is the pivotal role that of the village idiot who is mute?

A Vision Splendid

There seems a common thread in most reviews for "Ryan's Daughter", you will read that the film does not work, it not as good as Lean's earlier masterpieces, it's too long, too boring and too "big", ALL NOT TRUE!! I'm sure most of those reviewing this magnificent motion picture have only seen it on a VHS tape or Television screening, which is the only explanation for these strange comments. For those who saw "Ryan's Daughter", in it's original 70mm presentation or even in the recent Australian 35mm screenings, you will understand the intimacy and beauty of this wonderful film. Having enjoyed it's longest run in the world at Sydney's Ascot Cinema (approx 2 years) the Sydney movie goers went back again and again as they fully appreciated this fine movie. Hopefully Warner Bros are preparing a fabulous transfer from the original 70mm elements (a quality 70mm print still exist, thanks to the poor US box office) to give us a quality DVD and make the long, long wait worthwhile. I hope WB can add some better extras than the trailer and short "making of" MGM added to the Laserdisc, it would be good to see the 2004 BBC Documentary "Ryan's Daughter Revisited" with Sarah Miles as featured extra. Also surely MGM must have produced a lot of additional promo material as this was their premium and much anticpated 1970 release. Congratulations to those who love this movie, for those who critise it hopefully one you will get to see "Ryan's Daughter" as it was intended to "get" what Lean was doing and how successful he was at delivering. No one can argue that the cinematography is perhaps the BEST ever.

Uneven But Frantic

I found this film delightful. It is frantic and fun but somewhat uneven in it's pacing. Vittorio Gassman is quite good as the poor schmuck who unknowingly gives away a fortunate hidden in one of thirteen chairs, and Sharon Tate is delicious in her role as the antique dealer. Had she lived, she may well have made it as a light comedian. It was quite surprising to see Orson Welles in this light comedy. His performance is more understated than the other two stars, but still quite good.

Review :

Just another 1970's British sexual comedy – not terrible just basic and dated

A famous television "doctor" goes on a cruise that includes a pools winner, models, a camp photographer and a stern captain (a relation to Sir Spratt himself). Dr Burke tries to get onto the same cruise to talk to the wild Ophelia but finds himself stuck when it sails. He tries to hide as a stowaway. Lots of people run around, women are sexy, men are quite horny and so the whole horrible lot sails off into a period of British cinema that some like to forget, some thing of as fun and others call "sh1te".

If you want a potted history of how British film comedy changed in a few decades there are several places you can go but one place is the "Doctor" series of films that started in the 1950's and ended with this one in 1970. At the start the series was light to the point of blandness and very clean humour, however by this point the series has "sunk" to the sexual level of other British comedies of the 1970's such as the Carry On or Confessions type of film. Watching this will show you what I mean as there is loads of partial nudity, suggestive dialogue, Benny Hill ogling and so on. This doesn't mean it is better or worse than the original film but just a different thing and some viewers will enjoy it. Although it isn't high class or that funny, it does have a rough energy to it even if the sexual stuff hits the ground with a massively dated clang. It doesn't really stand out from anything else similar from the period but it is amusing and very genre and will perhaps please those expecting just that. The plot is meaningless of course but this shouldn't surprise anyone.

The British cast help on paper even if there isn't that much strong material for them. Philips has been much better elsewhere but he is a good sport and does his best with the "ooh I say" material that he was forever delivering. Justice barely makes an impression but his role is well covered by Morley who is amusing. Secombe is probably the pick of the cast – in real life I would have drowned myself to be free of his character but in the film he was pretty funny and he played it really well. Scoular is rubbish but to be honest most of the female cast are there for their bodies and the material only uses them for such. Dee is flat and seems all at sea alongside much more talented people. Small turns from Chapman and Le Mesurier are of good value though.

Overall this is a very basic film that tries to do all the things that the other sexual comedies of the period were doing. As such it is nothing special although happily it is not painful to watch (as some of them are). Fans of the original Doctor films will feel that this has drifted far from port, while others may just feel it is not that funny but it is distracting if dated stuff that can be enjoyed if in the mood.
