Review :

Fun an unforgettable black comedy by Berlanga.

"¡Vivan los novios!", is a film directed by Luis García Berlanga which tells the story of Leo Pozas "(López Vázquez), a middle-aged man, who travels to a Mediterranean village, with his elderly mother to marry his girlfriend "Loli "(Laly Soldevilla). But of course, prevented from seeing his bride until the wedding, surrounded by Swedish girls in bikinis on the beach, "Leo" starts to worry.

It's a portrait of a poor man overwhelmed by the circumstances and the will overturned completely, with a sense of uncomfortable and unpleasant humor, based primarily on embarrassment and more painful pathos bordering the grace and suffering, a man living a drama existential trapped in a grotesque mockery.

The approach of the film is same to other Spanish films of the same time as "Es peligroso casarse a los 60" or "No desearás al vecino del quinto". These films present us with the stereotype of the Spanish citizen at the time, exaggerated in their performances, as well as in situations in which it operates. The film, despite its repeated approach is very successful the idea of a film surreal and absurd humor.

The film becomes very funny in several scenes, makes you a good time living the foiled attempt to fling the protagonist, Jose Luis Lopez Vazquez, with the blonde girl of his dreams in full eve of his wedding with "Loli. " And it is worth highlighting the unforgettable and surreal scene of the "hippy" funeral with the deceased mother of "Leo".

"¡Vivan los novios!", can be seen as a hinge film Share film styles with its first phase and precedes the gross features of his cinema from "La escopeta nacional. " It's a film to claim and where José Luis López Vázquez out as the best actor, along with the splendid Laly Soldevilla, the couple wanted Berlanga for "boutique" and could not be.

no Bond ... but no Austin Powers either!

Too bad Dean Martin gave up on Matt Helm just as James Bond was in chaos in the wake of Sean Connery's departure... In 1969, the new Bond was an unknown and only had one true lady with "man appeal" on his side; Emma Peel herself, Miss Diana Rigg! Helm had all kinds of chicks, especially the sublime Miss Sharon Tate... On that advantage alone, Matt Helm could have overtaken James Bond's spot! Alas such a feat had to be accomplished by a total parody such as Powers many years later... Mind-boggling too when one considers the fact that Powers never had anyone even remotely close to the elegance of a Rigg or Tate next to his ridiculous frame...!

Matt Helm though -just as James Coburn's Our Man Flint series- was a far more subtle parody of the Bond myth... Thus worthier of eclipsing it than the ridiculous farce that Austin Powers and his mojo are! History tells us though that both Helm and Flint failed... and Powers is the one to finally outsell at the box-office the once-invincible Bond...

A classic not just for the song selections alone

A true classic for the hopelessly romantic. An ageless epic of romance and with sprinkles of suspense and agony of a woman scorned by one and yet passionate and protective of another who she had betrayed unknowingly. This is perhaps Asha Parekh's last starring role and she converges all of her emotions and essence into it portraying a woman living a lie. Rajesh Khanna plays true the man scorned by a love he has never seen and falls again for a maiden whom he isn't likely to get either. The songs alone channel the story through its pathway and the climax well - is not unlike so many other Hindi movies around. Prem Chopra a true Hindi villain and Bindu the budding vamp is just the right touch for any ole Hindi Classic.

Really Bad

Wedding Party, The (1969)

1/2 (out of 4)

Incredibly bad comedy was the second feature for director Brian DePalma. A groom (Charles Pfulger) shows up at his wedding party only to discover there's more to marriage than he thought. This film doesn't work on any level and the worse part is that I only laughed once throughout the 90 minute running time. Not even the young and chubby Robert DeNiro (spelled DeNero in the credits) can help this thing. The film uses faster frames per minute than normal, which I'm guessing is an attempt at silent slapstick but this doesn't work either.

The personnel at the 4077 MASH unit deal with the horrors of the Korean War and the stresses faced in surgery by whatever means. The tone at the MASH is established by recent arrivals, surgeons Captains 'Hawkeye' Pierce, 'Duke' Forrest, and 'Trapper' John McIntyre - the latter who Hawkeye knows he's met somewhere, but Trapper who won't divulge where - whose antics can be best described as non-regulation, and in the negative words of one of their fellow MASH-ers: unmilitary. The unit's commanding officer, Colonel Henry Blake, doesn't care about this behavior as long as it doesn't affect him, and as long as they do their job and do it well, which they do. Their behavior does extremely bother fellow surgeon, Major Frank Burns, and recently arrived head nurse, Major Margaret Houlihan, who obtains the nickname 'Hot Lips' based on information they glean about her through underhanded means. Beyond their battles with Frank and Hot Lips, Hawkeye, Duke and/or Trapper help unit dentist Painless ...

Clearly an important part of film history, but the years haven't been kind to it (in my eyes)

I should probably watch this again, since so many consider it a masterpiece. Maybe I was over-prepared (Hey, it took me a second viewing of 'Citizen Kane' to get my past pre-set expectations!). But while I could see why M*A*S*H was groundbreaking and important for a Hollywood film of it's day (lack of the usual clear narrative line, anti-war stance, overlapping, improvised dialogue, sexuality, bloody operating room scenes serving as ironic counterpart, etc), it felt pretty dated and unfocused. There are some very funny moments, but a lot of the ironies seem easy, and there's a lack of a true darker underpinnings and ideas, unlike, say, 'Dr. Strangelove'.

A lot of the humor is juvenile, cruel and silly. And while I get that's the point – nothing can be more deeply juvenile, cruel and silly than war, it got repetitive and heavy handed after a while. The performances are good, but beyond Robert Duvall, none of the characters have much in the way of dimensions. People stay exactly what we think they are from the moment we meet them.

Walter Chow makes a good argument on the web site 'Film Freak Central', that the sexism, homophobia, etc are the whole point. Altman is saying we're ALL beasts at heart, even if we act like we're bucking the system. It's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure I buy it's what Altman was intending.

Review :

Historically, the first French commercial movie dealing with the colonial war.

Claude Berri became famous worldwide with "Jean de Florette" and his remake of Pagnol's "Manon des sources" but his career had begun long before,in the early sixties when he was lucky to direct the great Michel Simon in "le vieil homme et l'infant" (an old man and a Jewish child during WW2).

"Le pistonné" is no masterpiece but it broke a taboo:never before,a commercial movie had dealt with the colonial war. Some would say there had been Jean-Luc Godard's "le petit soldat" ,but it was reserved for intellectuals and besides,it did not take place in North Africa.Claude Berri was virtually the first and the true forerunner of Yves Boisset ("RAS",1973) and René Vautier ("avoir 20 ans dans les Aurès",1971).

It's the story of a private, who does not feel like going to war ,not at all.But duty calls. To avoid it,he tries to get somebody to pull strings for him(that's what the title means). But alas,it will not work.

Guy Bedos gives a fine performance as the squaddie ,and he is so good we forget he's actually too old for the part. He's given strong support by Georges Géret as the warrant officer,a grumpy naive man to whom he makes believe he can bring Brigitte Bardot (no less) into the barracks .

The second part deals with the war itself (actually a guerrilla war)and although it is mainly a comedy, one of the last pictures which shows a maimed soldier who bursts out laughing nervously leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.
