Camp but Enjoyable Italian Gothic Horror

"Il Castello Dalle Porte Di Fuoco" (*) aka. "Altar of Blood"/"Blood Castle"/"Scream of the Demon Lover" (1970) is a below par Italian Gothic Horror film. This is not to say that it isn't a good film, however, as this combination of country and sub-genre has brought forth so many masterpieces and cult-gems, that even a highly entertaining, atmospheric and neat-looking flick like this one is below par (to be precise, this is an Italian Spanish Co-Production, the director José Luis Merino being Spanish).

José Luis Merino's film may lack logic, and seems to be terribly predictable and cheap in the beginning. However, it soon gets better, and furthermore turns out not to be quite as predictable as one might think. In the 19th century, the female chemist Ivanna (Erna Schürer) accepts a job in the castle of Baron Janos Delmar (Carlos Qunay). In spite of rumors that the Baron is a madman who rapes girls and has them mangled by his dogs, the un-superstitious Ivanna decides to stay. However, she soon has to realize that there are indeed strange things going on in the castle...

The foxy leading actress Erna Schürer might be recognized by Italian Horror lovers, as she had a role in Andrea Bianchi's sleazy Giallo "Nude Per L'Assassino" ("Strip Nude For the Killer", 1975); the role suits her quite well. Leading man Carlos Quinay appeared alongside the Spanish Horror legend Paul Naschy in "La Orgia De Los Muertos" (aka. "The Hanging Woman"/"Terror of the Living Dead", 1973). The cast member of this film that is doubtlessly (and rightly) best known, however, is the drop-dead gorgeous young Agostina Belli, a stunning beauty who appeared in a bunch of Italian genre films. She plays the supporting role of a young maid here. Marino Vidal Molina, who plays a police inspector, appeared in several films alongside Paul Naschy.

The film has a nice atmosphere, even though it is not quite as moody and eerie as it is the case with many other Italian Gothic Horror films. In some parts I was reminded of Antonio Margheriti's "La Vergine Di Norimberga" ("Horror Castle", 1963), which, of course, is a lot better. The plot has huge holes, but these holes are often entertaining, as are the spontaneous moments of comparatively rather tame sleaze. The camp-factor is definitely a good thing in this case. The characters' actions and emotions make little sense at times, but the film is entertaining anyway. It probably isn't going to scare anybody's pants off, but it is warmly recommendable to my fellow enthusiastic fans of Italian Gothic Horror. People not so familiar with the genre should doubtlessly stick with the many Italian Gothic Horror masterpieces, such as anything by Mario Bava, Antoni Margheriti, Riccardo Freda, etc. My rating of "Il Castello Dalle Porte Di Fuoco": 6/10

(*) This actually does not concern this film in particular, but all non-English language films listed on IMDb: Am I the only one who laments IMDb's decision to change from using original titles to using American a.k.a. titles? The titles used are often not even the most common English titles. And the name-change concerns only about half of the non-English films. Furthermore, the films appear under the English aka-title but are still alphabetically listed under the beginning letter of the original title. E.g.: "What Have You Done To Solange" is listed under "C" ("Cosa Avete Fatto A Solange"); this film appears as "Scream of the Demon Lover" but is listed under "I" ("Il Castello..."). This makes it quite confusing and annoying to browse one's own Reviews. Well, no sense in nagging, I guess.

The author of Death of Grass, John Christopher (real name Samuel You'd

  • for some reason, the IMDb site keeps adding an apostrophe to the name)

didn't see this film at the cinema when it was released.

Years later, when it was broadcast as a late night movie, he sat down to watch it in a comfy chair, a glass of whisky to hand. He lasted until the first advert break and then, sensibly, retired to bed.

This cries out to be remade - one or two of John Christopher's other novels would make interesting films, too.

John Christopher was often compared to John Wyndham and the similarity certainly exists - although Wyndham had the edge.

I wish IMDb would withdraw the 10 line minimum requirement - seems a bit arbitrary!

Based on satirical short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle about a vain, egotistical Etienne Gerard, a French brigadier serving during the Napoleonic Wars. He thinks he's the best soldier and lover that ever lived and intends to prove it.

Review :

Stop this movie, I want to get off!

Except for the easily entertained, who should always be ignored for their obvious stupidity, this film is a lumbering bore. McEnery is saddled with the hideously written title character who annoys one and all from the first scene to the last. He is that old standby: the oblivious vainglorious military schmuck. The adventures he engages in are more like antics, with lots of frantic activity in a vain attempt to provide humor. But Gerard is such an unwavering clod that he becomes tiresome very quickly, yet you're stuck with him until the end of this fiasco (that is if you decide to keep watching). Cardinale is quite fetching, as always, and Wallach tries as Napoleon, but the script lets them all down. The story is some dull nonsense about Napoleon in need of an idiot officer to bring a false dispatch to the enemy to wreak havoc. Gerard gets the thankless job but becomes an unexpected hero as the story unwinds. Quite predictable. It all takes place during Napoleon's war in Spain, but this is NOT something to look at if you're a fan of the 'Sharpe' series by Cornwell that takes place in the same venue. This film was barely released, deservedly, and remains fitfully buried to this day. Hopefully no where near Conan Doyle's final resting place.

Review :

Extremely funny predecessor of TV Inspector Derrick

Before becoming literally world famous for his series role of Oberinspektor Derrick of Munich police's homicide squad, Horst Tappert played the title role of Inspector Perrak of Hamburg vice squad. And this film has to be seen to be believed - it's like a prototype for the TV series that started four years later. The only real difference is that Perrak is intendedly funny at times and so becomes an extremely entertaining affair that delivers also many unintended gags.

Especially memorable is Tappert himself. He plays Perrak like a caricature of the forthcoming Derrick, and he does it great. The plot delivers the kinky moments that are typical for the early 1970s, with Perrak investigating the murder of a transvestite prostitute. His inquiry leads him to all kinds of red light establishments and adds to the entertainment. The case becomes personal for Perrak when his son Joschi gets kidnapped by thugs towards the end to guarantee an exciting climax.

A must see for friends of obscure German films of the Seventies. Besides Horst Tappert, the rest of the cast is also remarkable: Erika Pluhar and Judy Winters play the female leads, Werner Peters gives his penultimate performance in a theatrical movie, forthcoming "Derrick" and "Der Alte" regular Wolf Roth plays a young criminal in one of his earliest roles, and now well known comedian Jochen Busse appears as a contract killer! This movie has it all - but don't expect something else than trashy entertainment.

The Student Morons

IMDb mark: 3

This is a '70s type of film, all the way. Even though it was produced by Roger Corman's company, I don't think it is exactly the type of film people expect when they hear his name. Very likely, this blandness, as some might call it, has something to do with the fact that a woman directed the movie.

-Cast: I only heard of Elaine Giftos, whom I saw in a couple of episodes of 'Three's Company'. Other than her, I have never heard of any of the others. 2/20

-Nudity: I think Phred is the blond one; she is nude three times. Priscilla has the best nude scene, however. And Sharon is briefly topless, also. 14/20

-Ending: I wasn't crazy about the ending at all. Of course, taste varies. 4/15

-Acting: The acting in Corman's movies is usually very cheesy. So, maybe it's not surprising that it seemed cheesy here, too. 2/11

-Plot: Here are these 4 nurses, who are studying to become nurses. Dumb, isn't it? While doing so, they work and play, get tangled with the wrong people and, naturally, get involved with men. Each one of the four has like her own subplot. 2/10

-Theme: Don't mix business with pleasure. At least, that's what I make of it. 4/10

-Soundtrack: I couldn't say I liked it. 2/10

-Genre: This is a drama. 1/4

-->Overall: 31/100

Apart from the fact that the nurses are easy on the eyes, I couldn't possibly see why anyone would be compelled to watch this movie. It's a really bad sort of drama. From Swordlord, 2 swords down!

Review :

somewhat bewildering, but very entertaining

This is a fun movie with interesting characters, and lots of spaghetti western style. I found it very entertaining, although it has some story elements that don't seem to make a lot of sense.

George Hilton does a fine job of portraying "Sartana," the bounty hunter/detective/vigilante more often played by Gianni Garko. Hilton's style is slightly different, but he plays the part equally as well as Garko. The real show-stealer here is Charles Southwood as "Sabbath," a bounty hunter who dresses in all-white, carries a white parasol, and lives by the values taught to him by his mother. Sartana and Sabbath are both oddballs, each in his own way, but Sabbath is so eccentric he makes Sartana look normal. One of the many amusing parts of the film is when Sabbath comes riding into town with his parasol, and one of the townsfolk sees him and says "what's the west coming to?" Sartana and Sabbath play off of each other quite well, and their interactions are fun to watch, especially when they square off near the end of the film.

A great music score by Francesco DeMasi, along with some excellent camera work, help make this euro-western above average in the style department, but the somewhat muddy plot doesn't do it justice. It's basically about how a crooked town boss is taking gold from the local mines and replacing it with sand before it is shipped. Then he hires Mexican bandits to "rob" the shipments so that nobody will know that they were ever replaced with sand. In comes Sartana to save the day, though his motives for wanting to find the gold are selfish. A little while later, Sabbath shows up, supposedly for the same reason. That much is pretty cut and dry, but the problem is with the details. While the basic idea of the scam going on with the gold is easy to understand, some of the actions of the characters in the story don't make any sense, or perhaps aren't explained very well. Maybe the American version is poorly edited. That would explain a lot, but I don't know if it's the case.

The best way to watch it is to sit back, relax and enjoy the cool characters and style of this spaghetti western without trying to make sense out of everything that happens. When viewed with that attitude, it's actually one of the more memorable and entertaining films of the genre.

George Franju and Zola

The IMDb users know George Franju as the "les yeux sans visage " director, one of the best horror movies (who said best?) France has ever produced. His "la Tete contre les Murs" was at least as interesting but his remake of Feuillade' s "Judex" was not as convincing.

"La faute de l'abbé Mouret" is one of the weakest books in the Rougon -Macquart saga .Its "scandalous" side -a priest falling in love with a beautiful girl-seems tame by today's standards ,and it already was thirty-five years ago when I saw the film in a theater. Also handicapped by Gillian Hills's amateurish playing ,the movie was a flop.Francis Huster ,an earnest thespian (he used to play Corneille's "Le Cid" ) became famous but he had to wait until the eighties .The lack of good parts in the films probably led him to come back to stage again in the nineties.Best parts take place in the village where Franju shows his die-hard anti-clericalism,and André Lacombe as Archangias steals every scene he is in.but all that concerns "the Paradou" (the garden) sounds "hippie" and has not worn well.

The most famous scene is the heroine's strange suicide :she uses flowers.
