Amusing
Booth a funny and a thrilling movie about a woman who finds a murdered man in the office where she is working. But when the police arrives, the corpse have disappeared. A good crime story with many funny moments. Good plot and good actors. Recommended. (7 out of 10)
Raymond Chow seemed to have the right idea when he formed Golden Harvest, and that is to recruit young new faces to create his movies. In this movie he went to Taiwan to recruit Angela Mao who was a star in their Chinese opera theater. She's barely 20 in this movie with zero movie acting experience. That's a lot of risk to take on his first movie. But he seems to have good eye for talents, and many including Angela goes on to become some of the biggest Hong Kong movie stars.
Young Jackie Chan stars in this movie as well as his buddy from Peking Opera school days - Sammo Hung. They are billed (way) below Angela Mao in this movie.
Angela Mao is the daughter of a wealthy local magnate. Her father gets poisoned, and needs a cure from a herb that grows in a valley 1000 miles away. On the way to the valley lies the Angry River that burns everything that tries to cross it.
The format is classic Hong Kong Kung Fu movie, but there's something very modern about this movie. Perhaps it's because the quality is a notch above in almost all areas of production. It probably wasn't made on a big budget, as Bruce Lee only got $10K for his first appearance on Golden Harvest's movie. Other actors probably made much much less. Compared to now where lead stars often get well above one million Hong Kong dollar, this was the real formative days of Hong Kong cinema.
This is a beautiful movie, and should be seen in its remastered DVD. Angela Mao is exceptional in her athletic abilities, as well as her martial arts skills, and beauty. She really was the golden harvest for Golden Harvest.
In this first movie from Golden Harvest, you see the dawn of the new Hong Kong cinema that continues to this day.

Not my cup of tea but has much to admire about it
Being familiar with the story and Maria Callas, on the opera stage unrivalled as a singing-actress, were my main interests into watching Medea, having never seen a Passolini film before. I didn't love it, however I also didn't hate it, though I can see perfectly both viewpoints. I don't think Medea is a flawless film, some of the anachronisms did go over my head, the film due to some sluggish pacing can get dull at times, the centaur's monologue- though much of Medea is dialogue-free- goes on forever and gets tedious quickly and the way Jason's role is written and performed is too simplistic and rather amateurish. However, I did think it looked great, the locations are really unique and beautiful to look at and the cinematography gives a grim and surreal feel that actually suits the story. You can definitely sense that there is a sense of time and phrase, and it is quite clear here. The music is also incredible, it draws you right in, is very bold in orchestration and captures the atmosphere of the drama superbly. Passolini directs very assuredly on the whole, some scenes are evocatively savage and if there are any highlights they are Medea's mesmerising entrance and the genuinely frightening climax. The centaur is beautifully played, looking imposing and the relationship between him and Jason is the most convincing of the relationships between the characters. The main merit of Medea is Maria Callas' titular role performance, like she did on the opera stage with an intelligent, sensual and quite menacing presence she completely dominates every scene she appears in and is incredibly magnetic. Overall, more a film I appreciate but worth watching for Callas, the visuals and the score. 6/10 Bethany Cox

Weekend with the Babysitter (1971)
* (out of 4)
A hot shot director (George E. Carey) has a fight with his wife who then runs away with their young son. The babysitter Candy (Susan Romen) ends up coming over and gets offended by a screenplay he's about to do. To set him straight, the babysitter takes the director to hang out with her hippie friends and later the two have sex. While all of this is going on the wife has been kidnapped by her drug dealer. Yeah. As you can tell, part of this film plays out like a remake of the 1969 film The Babysitter as this features the same production company, director, actor and even the babysitter's name is the same. While that film worked this one here is a complete and utter disaster, which has perhaps one good scenes but the rest of the movie should be thrown in the toilet, although I'm sure even the toilet would try to spit it out. We basically get the exact same story as the previous film but this time out for some reason they tried to deliver an action movie, which is just downright stupid. This was obviously shot on a low budget so all the action scenes look incredibly bad and they really don't make any sense. The mean drug dealers are all fools and you hate the wife so much you really don't care what happens to her. The one decent scene is when the hippies are trying to explain to the old man how to smoke grass. His reactions to what he's being told is pretty priceless. Stone is a tad bit better here than he was in the 1969 film but that's still not saying too much. The biggest problem is with Romen who just doesn't work as Candy. She doesn't have any of the charm that the other film had and she just comes off rather bland.

excellent comedy with over the top characters
This movie's plot is of the type, where there is a bunch of interesting weird characters who go around doing weird, crazy stuff. It's kind of like slapstick in that it's more physical with facial tic's, people falling, brain transplants, bombs exploding, etc. It's a Czech 1970's new wave creation when everything was very hip and groovy and women were just discovering short skirts and beehive hairdo's. So we have a king, an astrologer who can tell the future using the stars, an evil military guy, a beautiful blonde who is there just for our eye candy really and the star lead woman who roles around hitting into all of these subjects. This lead movie lady is really very good, for a moment i thought she was the astrologer guy in drag, that's how well she impersonates him. Why does she do that? Can't tell you man, that's why this movie is so crazy. Give you a hint thought...brain transplants (lots of them). You are bound to have fun and laugh yourself silly with this good natured and family oriented (12+) spoof of people and their lives. Highly recommended.

Excellent and spectacular epic film set in the 17th-century during ¨Thirty Years War¨
The movie is set during Thirty years war -1618 to 1648- epoch , finished with ¨Westfalia treatise¨. There had too much fights , destruction, hunger, deceases , the struggles between Catholics and Protestants were bloody and cruel , being dead thousands people .
The picture deals with a peaceable, hidden valley that has remained untouched by the war , there arrives some warriors who impose the terror at a pristine village : murders, rape , rampage, etc.
The good guys are Omar Sharif , Florinda Bolkan , Arthur O'Connell, while the bad and villain guys are Michael Caine , Michael Gothard, Brian Blessed , among others , everybody give awesome performances.
Colorful and appropriate cinematography by John Wilcox, Hammer's usual and it was shown in Cinerama venues, was the last film to use the Todd-AO system for principle photography . John Barry musical score is evocative and breathtaking . Intelligent writing based on a novel by Pick and magnificent direction by James Clavell (¨To Sir , with love¨ and ¨Where's Jack¨), also producer , however being an unfortunate flop.

The Spine Of The Film Is Missing.
The subject of this film is passion; unfortunately, it is a film remarkably devoid of passion, despite its scenario that offers illicit love, jealousy and murder, and its location, set and filmed upon Cyprus, utilizing a cast that includes Greek Cypriots as supporting players and extras, and as well that splendid quality of light for which the island is noted, showcased here by cinematographer Marcello Gatti. Richard Johnson portrays Orestes, returning to his village following an absence of 15 years, to receive a bequest from his recently deceased father, and where he promptly begins an amour with the wife, Elena (Raquel Welch), of a long-time friend, she being very bored with an unrewarding existence, but their affair is suspected, leading to a grotesquely senseless climax for a film marked throughout with stylistic excesses. Actors generally relish taking on roles that appear atypical for them, but in this work some of the casting is simply too quaint, a suspension of disbelief beggared by attempts to accept Johnson as a turbulent Greek, poorly made up Flora Robson as Cypriot materfamilias, and especially Jack Hawkins as Eastern Orthodox priest, while ever decorative Welch plays herself, and the direction of Yorgo Pan Cosmatos checks a potential perception of believability in a viewer dealing with an overly episodic storyline.

For Theodore!
It is so amazing! When my ex wife and my two kids and me decided to go to live in Dubrovnik, we were warned by the director of this film Bato Čengić who I knew personally not to go to live there, because Dubrovnik is a small and a backwater place, destroyed by war. He said that a destiny of a kid portrayed in this film could come and hunt my sons.
I am sorry to say that my son Theodore lived a mobbing not very different from the mobbing of the Nazi kid portrayed in this film.
After my ex wife saw this film she came to ask me, since we were already divorced, to sign the papers so she and the kids could go and live back to the USA. I happily signed those papers, and my son Theodore is far away from the horrors which Dubrovnik can offer.
This film was not made in Bosnia or Serbia, but in Dubrovnik, more precisely in the summer residence of the Dubrovnik aristocracy in what today is marina for the yachts in Ombla river area. (By the way it is the shortest river in the world, it immediately runs into Adriatic Sea as soon as it springs out).
What a film! Apart that I am personally connected to the events portrayed in this film, you should see it, because it is a remarkable film!

Meh
Very 70's and very English. The Brits love their vicars. And the 70s loved the exploration of sex. Catchy theme song.
There's lots of Monty Python-esque tomfoolery as well. It's a weird films. Especially the sound. It has a dubbed quality to it, almost like it was made in Japan and dubbed in English. Only it's not.
Makes for weird viewing.
Not a lot of nudity despite the cover art and film concept.
The bottom line is this -- I really wanted to like this film. I'm a fan of English humor and Marty Feldman. But in the end, it's not really a good film. It will not deliver any belly laughs.

I liked it
I gave it a 7.5 rounded up to 8 as it's score on IMDb is really low. The music in this is awesome for one thing. The satire is amusing and I sense a lot of the internet generation who voted so low on this one just didn't get it. I laughed a few times. I was entertained throughout. Would be a nice double bill with Corman's the Trip, another under appreciated movie (at least on here). I liked the SW scenery too in this too. I thought this was way better than say Zabriskie Point which everyone raves about. Easy Rider will always be the best hippie road trip movie, but this wasn't that bad. It part sci-fi, part comedy, part musical, part exploitation, it kind of defies a neat little categorization. Don't let the IMDb hate scare you away, it's actually pretty good. I wish Corman had directed a few more movies.

Believe it or not, one of the BEST "Frankenstein" films!
Hammer did 7 Frankenstein films from the late 50s to early 70s:
The Curse of Frankenstein (1957)
The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958)
The Evil of Frankenstein (1964)
Frankenstein Created Woman (1967)
Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969)
The Horror of Frankenstein (1970)
Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (1973)
Peter Cushing played Baron Frankenstein in every one of these except "The Horror of Frankenstein" because it was a remake of the original story and they needed a much younger actor to play the role; they chose Ralph Bates (who superbly played the love-to-hate OTT satanist in "Taste the Blood of Dracula" released the same year).
In any event, we all know the basic Frankenstein story: A mad scientist is obsessed with creating life from an assortment of body parts. Eventually he succeeds and his creation goes on a killing spree, although the creature is nice to kids 'cause they're innocent. Ultimately the monster must be destroyed (and the Baron usually goes with him).
Ho Hum. Forgive me if this basic plot no longer trips my trigger. Thankfully, I recently saw a couple of Frankenstein flicks that stirred my interest in this age-old predictable story: This one and "Lady Frankenstein," detailed below.
Hammer's "Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed" was, as noted, the fifth film in their 7-film Frankenstein series. THE PLOT: Baron Frankenstein is a fugitive who goes by a different name but is intent on continuing his gruesome work. He ultimately blackmails a young couple in assisting him. They steal a patient from the local insane asylum and successfully transplant his brain into another body, curing his madness.
The film is highlighted by Veronica Carlson, who looks a lot like Ursula Andress, but possibly even more beautiful (if you can imagine that).
FINAL ANALYSIS: "Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed" is one of the best Frankenstein flicks I've seen. It's creative, labyrinthian and full of pizazz. Being a sequel, the film retains the essential elements of the original story but is a natural progression. The REAL monster in this picture is Baron Frankenstein himself; he's no longer a basically good person obsessed with creating life from corpses. His obsession has defiled him to the point of enmity, hate, arrogance, violence, rape and murder.
Another great Frankenstein film from this same period is the Italian "Lady Frankenstein," released in 1971, which starred Rosalba Neri (AKA Sara Bey) as the Baron's daughter who overtakes his work after his death. See my review for details.
Promise at Dawn (1970)iMDB Rating: 7.2 Date Released : 25 November 1970 Genre : Drama Stars : Melina Mercouri, Assi Dayan, Didier Haudepin, François Raffoul." /> Movie Quality : BRrip Format : MKV Size : 700 MB
Based on novelist Romain Gary's biography, this is a good film by Jules Dassin .Melina Mercouri may ham it up,but here with good results for her character of a Jewish mom is really convincing, and it's the main asset of Dassin's work. The director was succumbing to the vices of European cinema of the era: the slow motion sequences ,which were very trendy then are almost unbearable today.Romain is played by no less than three different actors:Didier Haudepin (Romain at 15) was famous for his sensational part of the young boy of "les Amitiés Particulières" and Assi (aka Assaf) Dayan (Romain at 25) played opposite Anjelica Huston in the latter's father's "A walk with love and death" released the same year.
Through the pleasure and the pain, through the years she came and went...Portrait of a mother .This is probably my favorite performance by M.Mercouri.

There's just one problem, he is also the first black heavyweight champion, and that bothers a lot of people. Jack's celebration is cut short, as Jack is framed for crossing a state line with Eleanor, his white fiancé (Jane Alexander in her first film role), a violation of the Mann Act. Facing a prison sentence, Jack escapes to Europe, with Eleanor in tow, encountering problems in England, and then France, and eventually landing in Cuba. In Havana, Jack agrees to enter the boxing ring for what might be the bout of his life. Both Jones and Alexander were nominated for Oscars.

Review :
Well worth seeing though I wished they hadn't fictionalized the story.
In 1968, the play "The Great White Hope" debuted. In 1969, it received the Tony award for Best Play and Best Actor. In an unusual move, Hollywood brought this film to the screen and kept the two leads--James Earl Jones and Jane Alexander.
The story is a fictionalized version a portion of the career of Jack Johnson. Names were changed (Johnson became Jefferson)--and I assume this was to avoid legal difficulties if the play and film differed from Johnson's real life. However, despite a few changes, it clearly IS the career of Jack Johnson from just before he won the Heavyweight Championship through his legal troubles because he had the temerity to sleep with a white woman during an era of rabid racism.
The second half of the film concerns Jefferson's exile. After a trumped up charge for violating the Mann Act (intended for prosecuting the prostitution trade), he and his friends flee the country. During this time, work is hard to come by and slowly Jefferson's spirits begin to fail--and he begins lashing out at everyone. First, it's his trainer and friends and then he becomes vicious towards his white girlfriend--very, very, very vicious. This part of the film is harder to watch and seems a bit slow, though I admire how the film didn't try to portray the man as an angel or just stoically accepting his fate, as Johnson's life did spiral out of control following his legal problems. He became an emotional mess--just like Jefferson.
Overall, this is a good film about race prejudice but it's not perfect. I would have rather they'd just dropped the 'Jefferson' stuff and simply made a biography of Johnson. Also, there is a lag in the film's tempo and the film drags a bit in portions of the second half. Still, it's a powerful film and you'll see Jones at his very best.
By the way, at the 53 minute mark, you see Mr. Jefferson and his entourage watching the guards outside Buckingham Palace. In the distance, you can see MODERN buses and cars--not ones from the early 20th century. It's probably not apparent on smaller televisions, but on the 58" one I saw this film on, it was VERY clear--and must have been even more obvious to folks who saw it in the theaters! Also, in case you were wondering, at the outdoor beer hall in Germany the German soldier kept shouting 'Kameradschaft'. This translates to 'to Comradeship' or 'camaraderie'.

Above average movie about a moonshiner using his Daughter to keep the law off his back by using her to strike up a romance with the local sheriff (Peck). Strange role for Peck who normally plays a champion of the people, but Peck does a great job at being taken in by this moonshiners ruse.
